The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZiFA) has issued a statement stating that their former President Philip Chiyangwa has been banned for life “for bringing Zimbabwean football to disrepute.”
ZiFA accused Chiyangwa of “unilaterally submitting an incomplete bid document” to host this year’s Cosafa cup tournament “without getting a government guarantee.”
Chiyangwa is currently Cosafa’s president, though he lost his position as ZiFA’s President last year.
Cosafa is the Southern African Regional Football body.
Zimbabwe turned their backs on an agreement to stage the tournament which pushed South Africa to step in and host the tournament.
Zimbabwe’s decision to withdraw from hosting the tournament means they could be banned or face a heavy fine from Cosafa or even face both punishments.
This ban from ZiFA which comes into effect immediately, means Chiyangwa is not allowed to all ZiFA sanctioned games played in Zimbabwe, conferences, football meetings and any football related activity in Zimbabwe.
The former ZiFA President is yet to make an official response on the ban.
If this ban is effectively enforced by ZiFA, it will greatly affect his position as the regional football body’s President.
