With elimination all but certain from the ongoing Africa Nations Championship, Namibia Coach Bobby Samaria says his team will be playing for the flag, badge and the national anthem when they take to the field for their last encounter.
Namibia will face the Chipolopolo of Zambia this Wednesday, January 27 at 8 pm at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.
It has been a disappointing performance for the Brave Warriors of Namibia who had nursed the ambition of crossing the group stage into the quarter-finals, something they had done previously.
This was the second participation for Namibia in the Africa Nations Championship, a competition for locally-based players. In their last participation in 2018, the team succeeded in reaching the quarter-finals.
“If there is one lesson that we will have to take back to Namibia from this competition, its mistakes can cost you games,” Namibia Coach Bobby Samaria said.
At the 2018 CHAN Zambia and Namibia played out a 1-1 draw and Coach Bobby Samaria says a lot has changed since both sides last faced each other. “That was in the past. The difference is that in 2018 we did not have to deal with COVDI-19 pandemic. This pandemic has affected most football teams. When we played Tanzania, we created very good chances that we could have converted but due to the pandemic and other reasons we could not convert our chances. These contributed to the ultimate performance of the team.”
Bobby Samaria added: “We will not use the pandemic as an excuse. My boys did not apply themselves to the game very well – Conceding two goals from the first half mistakes in our first game matters a lot. It is not all about how much you fall but how quickly you rise. We are looking ahead to a much-improved performance against Zambia.
It should be noted that after 2 games played in Group D, Guinea leads with 4 points, followed by Zambia with 4 points. Just goal difference separates Guinea from Zambia. Tanzania is third with 3 points. They can qualify for the quarter-finals should they beat Guinea. Namibia is bottom of the group with 0 points.
