Zamalek of Egypt have sacked their 64 years old Swiss coach Christian Jürgen Gross after he led them less than a week ago to a first win in the CAF Confederations Cup this season against Renaissance Sportive Berkane from Morocco.
The club had been without continental football glory for 16 years since they defeated Wydad of Casablanca in the CAF Super Cup in 2003.
The announcement was made by the chairman of the Cairo based club Mortada Mansour after their 1-1 draw with Al Intag Al Harbi in the Egyptian League.
Khaled Galal has been appointed to take charge for the remainder of the season.
“I will not renew his contract, I told him that he is no longer the head coach of the team, he will leave Egypt soon, Khaled Galal will take charge of the team for the remaining of the Egyptian league matches.” Mr Mansour said.
The former coach of Wil, Grasshoppers of Zurich, Tottenham Hotspur, VfB Stuttgart, Young Boys of Bernes and Al Ahly Jeddah took charge of Zamalek in April 2018.
The 12 times Egyptian league winners have managed to earn 67 points in 30 league games three points behind second placed Pyramids and seven behind league leaders Al Ahly.
Khaled Galal has four games to justify the choice of the Chairman and his first challenge will be against 13th placed Haras El Hodood on Monday June 3, 2019.
