Yaya Toure has turned down the chance to join a Brazilian club because his wife refused to live in Rio.
The former Monaco, Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder was poised to join Brazilian top flight side Botafogo. After his wife’s refusal to live in Brazil he made a U-turn which has now taken the potential move off the table.
The 36-year-old native of Bouake has been without a club since his departure from Chinese Super League side Quingdao Huanghai in December last year.
He held positive talks with Botafogo’s Director Ricardo Rostenberg before backing out of the possible move later.
The four times African Player of the Year winner informed Rostenberg over the weekend that he was not going to sign for Botafogo as previously agreed, because his wife Gineba did not want to make the switch to Brazil.
Though he had a change of mind 24 hours after later and informed Rostenberg that he was willing to sign, Rostenberg informed him that the move was no longer possible that the club had already pulled off the plug from the move, as Botafogo have now switched their interest to 32-year-old Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel.
Botafogo are making some high profile signings which include former Milan AC and Japan international forward Kaisuke Honda in a bid to challenge for domestic and continental trophies.
Yaya Toure’s wife had followed him from Ivory Coast to Belgium, Ukraine, Greece, France, Spain, England and China. But this time she did not fancy a Samba lifestyle.
Toure has had a very successful career, winning league titles in Greece, Spain and England, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League and the African Cup of Nations wit the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire.
He helped Quingdao Huanghai to gain promotion to the Chinese top flight, though he was sent off in their last game just 10 seconds into the match, after a VAR official spotted him kicking out at an opponent.
He is also known for his fight against racism and even accused his former Manager at Barcelona and Manchester City Pep Guardiola for racism, which might affected his huge fans favorite status at the Etihad Stadium where he won three Premier titles as one of the club’s greatest players of all times.
He won 101 caps for Côte d’Ivoire scoring 19 goals.
