The South African male relay team ably led by Akani Simbine stole the show at the final of the 4 by 100 world relays event going on at Selsia, Poland on Sunday.
They won the final of the 4×100 metres relay at the World Relay Championship in 38.71 secs.
In a race that didn’t have the South Africans in the mix at the beginning, the end saw South Africa take it by the whiskers from Brazil.
The team captain, Akani closed in in the final leg and took it on the line by a hundredth of a second from Brazil.
It was a great performance from a team that qualified for the final from the heat by placing second in a time of 38.49s.
However, it was a sad ending for fellow Africans, Ghana who had finished third, but were disqualified.
Ghana’s disqualification came as a result of a late changeover between the pair of Azamati and Joseph Manu.
This disqualification means the team loses $10,000 prize money.
