Nigeria have had a a good outing at the seventh leg of the World Para Athletics GP taking place in Tunis. Team Nigeria had a good outing on Day one, garnering two GOLD and 2 SIlver.
Christian Ifeanyi (men’s T46) and Flora Ugwunwa ( women’s T54 Javelin) were the two GOLD medalist on the day for Nigeria.
Uwak Unyime and Lauritta Onye took silver silver medals.
Commonwealth Games Champion, Lauritta Onye (8.15m) lost to the home favorite,Tilil Raoua in the women’s F40 shot put event while Uwak Unyime Christopher (13.00s) also settled for silver in the women T46 100m.
The Nigerian Para athletics departed for Tunis with the squad made of of five athletes and four officials with the Tunisian Grand starting on 26th July 2019.
Christian Ifeanyi, T46 class (men’s 100m, 200m & 400m), Unyime Uwak T47 class (women’s 100m & 200m), Onye Lauritta F40 class (Shot Put and Discuss) and Flora Ugwunwa F54 class (Shot Put/ Javelin F54 class) will be representing Nigeria in Tunis.
The fifth athlete that will be competing at the Grand Prix is Philip Eneche. The athlete would hope he can seal qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic as he would be competing in the men’s Shot Put/Javelin F20 class.
Like the Diamond_League, the World Para Athletics Grand Prix series in Tunis is the seventh leg of a nine leg series. It takes place around the world between February and August with the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai to follow in November. The World Para Athletics Grand Prix series enters its seventh year in 2019.
Bydgoszcz, Poland will host the next grand prix from 19-21 July 2019.
Paris will stage the season-ender for the first time in its third year as a Grand Prix host. The home of the 2024 Paralympic Games is no stranger to top quality sports competition, with several world records set in both track and field at the 2018 edition from 29-30 August 2019 in Paris, France.
