New Stars of Douala are off to a winning start as the second round of the MTN Elite One championship got underway this Sunday thanks to an early goal from Franck William Matam.

The very formidable New Stars side picked by coach Francois Djike had experienced campaigners Michel Yemog, Junior Dande, Ivan Bruno Mengaptche didn’t dissapoint against an OFTA side that was counting on the attacking strength of their lead scorer Le-Prat Manyo and the goalkeeping skills of Benjamin Munya.

Franck William Matam scored a beauty of a free kick six minutes into the contest put the men from Douala ahead in a first-half characterized by missed opportunities.

The early goal ended up being the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes that had a few more half chances.

Five minutes upon resumption for the second segment, Fabrice Pierre Ambassa of New Stars picked up the first booking for a heavy challenge just around the half way line.

OFTA Starting XI

Chances were few and far between throughout the second segment as both sides.

Ivan Cabrel Djantou could have made it 2-0 in the 79th minute but after sitting two defenders for OFTA he could only manage a weak shot on target that was comfortably gathered by Benjamin Munya.

Substitute Abdoulaye Kouty Ntepe forced Dande Junior to make a brilliant save for New Stars barely three minutes later following his shot from 35 meters out.

Those two chances in quick succession were the last for both sides.

The game remained on the 1-0 scored till full time thus earning a third win to add to three draws from previous games. New Stars however only have nine points as they were deducted three points after the end of the first round for absenting their game against UMS of Loum.

The matchday 12 victory still leaves New Stars on the 10th spot in the 12 clubs pool A in which OFTA occupies the 8th spot with 11 points.

OFTA confronts Avion Academy in their next outing on Wednesday while New Stars face Bamboutos FC of Mbouda.

New Stars Starting XI: Junior Dande, Ivan Bruno, Jean Junior Manga,Jean Parfait Tchoubia,Ivan Gabriel Djantou,Franck William Matam 6′, Oscar Eboa, Baba Ismaela, Michel Yemog, Fabrice Pierre Ambassa, Aristide Jordan Kouayep

OFTA Starting XI:
