17 times champions of Kenya,Gor Mahia will welcome New Stars of Douala this Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. Both clubs open the battle for one slot in the group stage of the CAF Confederation cup to conclude it next weekend in Cameroon.
New Stars of Douala will arrive Nairobi on Friday. The club unbeaten away from home in the Confederation cup this season while their opponents Gor Mahia that have been demoted from the Champions league have a 100% record at home in the this season, making it an interesting game.
Ahead of the first ever meeting between these two clubs this is what history have between Gor Mahia and Cameroonian clubs.
1979: African Cup Winners Cup Finals.
Gor Mahia 0
Canon Yaounde 2
Canon Yaounde 6
Gor Mahia 1
Emana scored a hat trick,Manga Onguene scored a brace and Mbida got the other goal for Canon.
The then CAF boss Tessema handed the trophy to Abega Theoephile as Canon completed their invincibility.
*1992: African Champions Cup-8th finals*
Gor Mahia 0
Canon Yaounde 0
Canon Yaounde 1
Gor Mahia 1
At the end of the 1992 meeting,Gor Mahia moved on to Quarter Finals on the away goals rule.
*Head to Head*
These two clubs have never met but Gor Mahia have had 4 previous meetings with Cameroonian clubs while New Stars have never faced a Kenyan opposition.
So in 4 games against Cameroonian opponents(Canon Yaounde only) Gor Mahia is still looking for their first win and have scored 2 goals and conceeded 9.
*Current form in CAF competitions*
Gor Mahia have won two of their last 4 games in the Champions league, all at home while New Stars have won 1 of their last 4 Confederation cup games and the only win came away from home against Vitalo of Burundi.
Gor Mahia will be counting on Kenyan Football legend and veteran goal getter ,Denis Oliech who recently joined them while New Stars nearly irresistable forward,Ngongang Figo Junior who has scored 5 away goals in the competition this term carries their dreams to make it to the group stage of the competition for the first time in the club’s history.
Former Bamboutos FC and Tiko United striker,Ngwa Baldwin Afa’nwi played for Gor Mahia between 2008-2011.The Cameroonian striker later moved Algeria to join JS Kairouan.
The first 35 minutes and the last 10 minutes of this game will be the most crucial moments going by the form of these club.
In Gor Mahia’s last home game in the Champions league against Lobi Stars of Nigeria there were 4 goals within the first 33 minutes and in the reverse fixture Lobi scored within the last 5 minutes just like Gor Mahia scored in the 90th minutes in their first champions league game this season against Bullets.
New Stars also got 3 goals in the first 35 minutes against Vitalo away from home.Sure these examples carry a message??
The second leg of this tie takes place in Cameroon a week after the first game.
