Barely two months to the kickoff of the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, coaches and technical staff of all the twenty four teams to take part in the tournament are keeping a close eye on how their current and potential players are performing in their respective clubs.
This is how the current and potential Indomitable Lions contributed to the results of their clubs over the weekend.
In England there is a change of fortunes for Andre Zambo Anguissa under new manager Scott Parker. The Cameroon midfielder now has more game time, he has started and completed their last two league games. Unfortunately, this has not translated to better results for his team. Fulham lost at home 0-2 to potential league winners Manchester City. Fulham have managed just 19 points all season and it looks very unlikely to see them beat the drop.
Defender Gaetan Bong had to settle for a place beside his coach and watch helplessly as Brighton & Hove Albion were beaten 0-1 by a very spirited Southampton team. Both teams are now tied on 33 points but Brighton have a better goal difference. Chris Hughton prefers Bernardo over Bong.
Liverpool made a huge statement in their challenge to be English champions with a deserved 2-1 win over Tottenham. Their Cameroon defender Joel Matip was in fine form. The former Shalke 04 defender is steadily making his critics to eat back their words.
Dimitri Oberlin has turned down a call to play for Cameroon, but he is still eligible hoping that he can be convinced. He was an unused substitute in Empoli’s defeat to Juventus in match Day 29 in the Series A.
Highly rated Cameroon defender Nicolas Nkoulou Doubena missed Torino’s 1-1 draw with Fiorentina due to suspension for accumulated yellow cards. He has been rock solid in Walter Mazzari’s back three for Torino all season.
In the Italian Serie B, forward Joseph Minala is completely out of favour. He was overlooked by Adamo Gregucci in Salernitana’s 1-1 draw to visiting Vincenza. The Cameroonian striker who joint Salernitana on loan from Lazio has barely had any game time this season.
Allan Nyom and Leganes are certainly punching above their weight in the Spanish top flight. They earned a precious 0-2 win away from home against Getafe. Coach Mauricio Pellegrino called Nyom for a rest at the 79th minute and brought in Juanfran.
Karl Toko Ekambi missed Cameroon’s crucial qualifier for Afcon 2019 against the Comoros Islands though his teammates made sure of the qualification.
He opened the scoring for Villarreal at 11th minute against Celta Vigo. He led the line alongside Spain’s Vincente Iborra. Unfortunately, Javi Calleja’s men threw away a two goals lead as Celta rallied to score three. Villarreal are currently 17th on the log with 29points, one more than Celta Viga who are in the relegation places.
Rayo Vallecano held Betis Seville to a 1-1 draw. Cameroon midfielder Wilfrid Kaptoum was introduced into the game at the 68th minute for Argentine international Giovani Lo Celso by coach Quique Setien of Betis. The FC Barcelona youth product gave a good account of himself.
The departure of Pablo Machin has not worked the magic for FC Sevilla. They lost at home 0-1 to Valencia. New coach Joaquin Caparros pulled out potential Indomitable Lion Ibrahim Amadou at the 46th minute. He made way for Franco Vazquez.

Paris Saint Germain are sure to be French champions at the end of the season, but the team seems to have lost both confidence and hunger after the unfortunate champions league elimination against Manchester United. They battled to last minute 0-1 win against Toulouse. Cameroon forward Eric Maxime Choupo Moting is one of the few who will not have any complaints. He played the game from start to finish which is not an opportunity he gets often.
