After over two months of inactivity for football stakeholders, activities in Tanzania are expected to resume by June 1st, 2020.

The go ahead has been given by the president of the country John Pombe Magufuli, on Thursday May 21, 2020.

“We will not limit ourselves… from June 1, the leagues will resume.”

“We have different tiers in sports from the top to the lower tiers. I have decided to give the green light for the games to resume from June 1. people have to play.” He added.

His decision comes as a result of studies made on the number of cases recorded and no athlete has fallen victim.

“In the [coronavirus pandemic] trend we have been studying, no athlete has died in Tanzania due to the virus.” President Magufuli added.

According to him resuming football activities will serve as a means to fight the pandemic.

“I believe having active games will help in the fight against CoronaVirus and we have many disciplines across. Reinstating games will definitely help us in this battle.”

The Head of State while making the decision speculated that the Ministry of Health will give guidelines on how fans will attend the games.

“The Ministry of Health and that for Sports will give guidelines on how the fans will attend the games and cheer their respective teams. We have to observe social distancing as well to curb the spread of the virus.”

Football Leagues and other activities were
halted in Tanzania on March 17, 2020 when the country recorded its first COVID-19 cases.

Simba SC are currently top of the the league table after playing 28 matches out of 38 with 71 points against their name.

While other countries have ended the league and declared winners, Tanzania is rather giving room to lovers of sports to enjoy beautiful game and a winner known from the pitch.

Tanzania will be the second African country to resume sporting activities in this period of COVID-19. Burundi resumes this weekend.
