Rwanda coach, Vincent Mashami was happy and elated with the fighting spirit of his side after their 3-2 win over the hawks of Togo in their final Group C game on Tuesday.
Rwanda came from behind twice to defeat debutant, Togo, which ensured that they proceed to the quarter-final of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon.
On Coming from afar to qualify to the second round
We are extremely happy and truly we came from afar to beat a very good side. I congratulate them for showing us their qualities.
We fought back on two occasions which was a very good mentality. The second striker option I chose was advantageous and he did exactly what he had to do.
We had to win by all means because it was a do or die for us.
I thank all our fans for their support because it’s a big achievement yet we know what lies ahead is even tougher but today we need to savor this victory.
On goals conceded by Rwanda after two clean sheets
Unfortunately today we had to open the game, especially after we lost Thiery through injury in the early minutes of the game and conceded first. We need to work on every aspect of the game as we progress so that we too can cause problems for our next opponent.
Togo coach, Jean-Paul Abalo on his side showed his frustration after his team defeat.
He said: “We failed offensively to take our chances. After we scored the first goal, the Rwandans equalized via a handball which eluded the referee. It’s frustrating to concede the way we did throughout the game and congratulations to Rwanda.”
Rwanda and defining Champions, Morocco will await the qualifying teams in Group D to know their quarter-final opponents at the end of today (Wednesday).
