Draw for the last round of qualifiers in the CAF zone for the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar, have been made. The draw ceremony took place in Cameroon’s Economic Capital, Douala this Saturday.
10 African Nations are fighting for just five available tickets for Qatar 2022. The draw has seen African football powerhouses facing each other, which many top ranking African teams will definitely miss out on the Qatari trip come November 2022.
A case in point pits two of Africa’s hottest Footballers who would have wished to be amongst global soccer stars robbing shoulders in Qatar later this year. Senegal of Sadio Mane and Egypt of Mohamed Salah, have been paired again each other, which means just one of them will make it to Qatar. The Liverpool duo have been in fine form at club level, but unfortunately one of them will miss out on the world cup trip.
Cameroon, with Seven World cup participations to boast of, have been paired against the Desert foxes of Algeria. Algeria who were recently eliminated at the first round of the 2021 AFCON, will definitely be coming back to re_write the wrongs of their AFCON debacle. Securing a place for the global event, will be a consolation to the football loving Algerian public, but then the indomitable lions of Cameroon will be looking to keep their records as the African Nation with the highest world cup participations.
Two West African giants, Ghana and Nigeria, will battle for one spot. The super eagles are enjoying a scintillating run at AFCON 2021 in Cameroon, which is in sharp contrast to Ghana’s mediocre display in the same competition, which saw them butted out in the group stage and Coach Milovan Rajevac fired from his post.
DR Congo who are one of the notable absentees at the 2021 AFCON, will be looking to appease the Congolese, with a world cup ticket, when they face high flying Atlas Lions of Morocco.
Mali and Tunisia have found themselves in a re_make of their AFCON group F game, when they will meet to decide who goes to Qatar and who stays back home. The Eagles of Mali and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia will surely still have memories of their game in Limbe in mind.
