Host of 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Atlas Lionesses of Morocco pipped debutant, Botswana 2-1 to make it to the semi-final of the tournament.
As early as the third minute of play, Sanaa Mssoudy scored the first goal of the game for Morocco in the quarter-final clash.
The lead lasted just four minutes as Keitumetse Dithebe equalised for Botswana in the seventh minute.
Yasmin Katie Mrabet converted the winning goal for the North Africans in the 59th minute at the Stade de Moulay Abdallah, Rabat to seal a semi-final place for Morocco.
This will be the first time that Morocco will be making it to the knockout stage of WAFCON and by extension the semi-final.
The victory also ensured that Morocco will become the first North African senior women’s national team to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Moroccan Under 17 (U-17) women’s side had initially qualified for India 2022 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup showcasing the immense hard work and investment in women’s football by Fauzi Lekjaa-led Football Federation.
