The 13th of September, 2016 was a historic day for Burundian football as the Senior women’s national team played their first official game, losing 4-0 to Kenya.
Less than six (6) years later, the remarkable story took a different turn with Burundi’s historic qualification to the 12th edition of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2022).
It was an incredible qualification journey that saw the Swallows scoring an incredible 17 goals over four (4) games on their road to Morocco.
Managed by Gustave Niyankuru and led by the deadly duo of Rukiya Bizimana and Umimana Anielia, the Swallows are looking forward to enjoying every moment of the historical dream.
Burundi is one of the four (4) debutants at this year’s tournament after the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) increased the number of participating teams from eight (8) to twelve (12) teams giving the likes of Burundi, Botswana, Togo, and Burkina Faso their debut appearances.
The Swallows will face giants Nigeria, South Africa, ad fellow debutant, Botswana in Group C.
