UPL:Police lack the arsenal to protect talents

Almost every season, Police Football Club has produced a number of good players in the StarTimes Uganda Premier (UPL), in fact their times when they produce outstanding players.

But they end up losing the players, some which has affected the growth of the side into a formidable competitive side, something Police FC coach Abdullah Mubiru relates to the club’s poor financial position.

“It’s been a little bit challenging to retain most of the big-name players because the finances to facilitate them at the club are lacking,” Mubiru told Football256 before adding.

“After going several months without pay some of the players decide to move on, when the season ends because the club doesn’t have the financial muscle to hold onto them” he added.

In at the 2017/18 season, Police lost Gift Ali, Rahmat Ssenfuka, Hood Kaweesa, Yasin Mugume and as if that was not enough, the former two to Proline and Vipers while the latter two left for greener pastures outside Uganda.

The following season, Police lost the league’s top scorer Juma Balinya who had managed 19 goals together with Paul Willa, Norman Ogik to Yanga (Tanzania), Vipers and Wakiso Giants respectively.

“In all the three years I’ve been here, we’ve been caught up in a hard situation where we’ve been building a new team each and every season, something that has taken us backwards in one way or the other.”

“Going forward, I would like to ensure that there’s a little bit of stability instead of letting high profile players leave every season,” he noted.

Currently Police find themselves between a hard place and a rock about forward Derrick Kakooza who’s heavily link with a move to Wakiso Giants.

The youngster has managed four goals in seven appearance for Police this season playing a major role in the 6-1 thumping of Express FC where he scored a brace.

“His contract is out and that goes back to the administration on how they can handle his situation but to me he’s young and talented therefore I wish he stays,” Mubiru concluded.

The 2005 league winners finished 13th on the 16-team log with 25 points, one point above the red zone after FUFA decided to cancel the 2019/2020 football due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
