The disciplinary committee of the European Football governing body, UEFA, has acknowledged Andre Onana’s consumption of a ban substance last October which led to his suspension last week was unintentional.
According to reports there’s a likelihood that the one-year ban from football activities placed on the 24-year old Cameroonian maybe reviewed and a way softer penalty handed the Ajax Amsterdam number one.
Origin of the story:
The disciplinary body of the European football association, UEFA, imposed a suspension of 12 months on the keeper for a doping violation. After an “out of competition” check on October 30 last year, the goalkeeper found the substance Furosemide in his urine. The suspension applies to all football activities, both national and international.
How Onana got into trouble:
On the morning of October 30, Onana was feeling unwell. He wanted to take a pill to ease the discomfort. Unknowingly, however, he took Lasimac, a drug that his wife had previously been prescribed. Onana’s confusion resulted in him mistakenly taking his wife’s medicine, ultimately causing this measure to be taken by UEFA against the goalkeeper. Furthermore, the disciplinary body of the football association has stated that Onana had no intention of cheating. However, the European Football Association believes, on the basis of the applicable anti-doping rules, that an athlete has a duty at all times to ensure that no banned substances enter the body.
Fresh Twist:
Since Onana appealed the decision, sources say the Court of Arbitration for Sports can reduce the ban but not completely cancel it.
Ajax Amsterdam players began life in the absence of Onana with a 2-1 win against PSV on Wednesday. Before the game, the players warm-up with jerseys carrying Onana’s name as part of their support to their colleague.
Since arriving Amsterdam, Andre has grown into one of the best goalkeeper in the world.
Last summer, he had a gentleman’s agreement with Ajax officials to spend the 2019-2020 season at the Cryuiff Arena before finding a new challenge.
The Cameroonian joined the Dutch side in 2015 from Barcelona B and became Ajax’s undisputable first choice keeper in the 2016/2017 season. Since then, he has made 140 appearances in all competitions.
In the 2019-2020 season, Onana was involved in 39 games, conceded 37 goals in all competitions with 15 clean sheets from 3500 minutes of football.
This term his performance has maintained a similar performance for Ajax helping them to the top of the Eredivise.
Onana has contributed in winning one dutch league title and a dutch domestic cup for the Ajax faithfuls.
