45-year-old Mauril Njoya Mezack has promised to remain professional despite facing his country of birth in the opening match of the Under 20 AFCON.
Host Mauritania will face Cameroon this Sunday, February 14 at the Olympique Nouakchott Stadium. The game comes up at 20:00.
At a pre-match press conference, this Saturday, Cameroonian Mauritania coach Mauril Njoya Mezack said: “I will say that we are spoiled but before I get there, I would like to mention the push of fate. I would like to say that for the past thirty years, I have always walked with destiny. Otherwise, you cannot explain that I was appointed to head the technical supervision of the national U-20 team two months before the competition and that by the chance of the draw, I find myself facing the national team of Cameroon which is my country.”
“But I am bound by a professional obligation. Cameroon indeed gave me life but Mauritania gave me everything and I can answer my duty to give satisfaction to this Mauritania which has given me everything. I believe we are on the right track. The team is well prepared to tackle this deadline.”
Despite born in Cameroon Mauril Njoya has made a name for himself in Ivory Coast and Mauritania where he was won several titles. With FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania, Mauril Njoya in his second spell at the club, Mauril Njoya won three consecutive titles from 2017, adding to the two he got in his first spell in charge of the club.
He has won various individual awards such as best coach awards in Ivory Coast (2011-2012 and 2015-2016) and the award for best trainer in Mauritania (2013-2014 and 2018-2019).
He left FC Nouadhibou and was then appointed Coach of the Mauritania U-20 team. The goal for the country will be to have a better showing at the competition on home soil. After this opening game against Cameroon, Mauritania will face Mozambique on February 17.
