Baby Lions win Under 17 AFCON in Tanzania 2019

When the 2019 Under 17 FIFA World Cup gets underway in Brazil later this month, Cameroon’s Under 17 national football team known as the Under-17 Lions will be one of the 4 teams representing the African at the event.
The Lions picked up a ticket for the Brazil tournament courtesy of the brilliant performance of the team in the 2019 Under 17 AFCON in Tanzania earlier this year.

Below are ten catching details to keep about the team ahead of the World Cup.

1)The 2019 World Cup will be Cameroon’s second participation in the tournament and in their debut tournament sixteen years ago, they were also champions of Africa

2)Enzo Tchato and Etienne Pineda Eto’o have been named in the country’s 27-man provisional squad for the tournament. Both players are sons of former football greats for the country.
Enzo’s father, Bill Tchato won 53 caps for Cameroon and was a solid left footed defender for country for close to a decade.

Pineda’s father is the great Samuel Eto’o Fils who is Cameroon’s all-time leading scorer and winner of 2 AFCON titles plus an Olympic goal medal for Cameroon. Samuel Eto’o Fils and Bill Tchato were also teammates, both of them started in Cameroon’s defeat to Egypt in the 2008 AFCON final.
Samuel Eto’o won 79 caps for Cameroon and scored 54 goals for the country.
Pineda scored on debut in a 3-1 win over the senior side of Brasilia CF.

Coincidentally both Etienne and Enzo play in the same positions their fathers played for Cameroon.

3)Cameroon’s deputy captain Steve Mvoue is another son that resembles his parents, his mother Regis Mvoue played for and captain the Women’s National team of Cameroon. His elder brother Stephane Zobo has also played for the Under 17’s and is Mvoue current team mate at Toulouse FC.

4)Cameroon enter the World Cup as African champions but failed to score in their last 3 games in the AFCON.

5)Just like for the 2019 Under-17 AFCON, Cameroon arrived Brazil for the tournament ahead of all the participants.

6)Cameroon is currently unbeaten in 10 competitive games under coach Thomas Libih but are on a run of 270 football minutes without scoring in a competitive game.

7)Cameroon is the only team that won the “man of the match awards” in the 2019 AFCON tournament, which serve as a qualifier for this tournament.

8)Five of the Cameroon players preselected for the tournament were born out of Cameroon.

9)Fabrice Ndzie is the longest serving player in this category of the national team. He has appeared in 2 AFCON tournament and eagerly awaits his World Cup debut.

10)Yannick Noah is one of Cameroon’s lead striker. He was named the after legendary Franco-Cameroonian Tennis player Yannick Noah.

11)If Cameroon gets to the final of the World Cup, they will play the final on the 54th birthday of coach Thomas Liibih.
Team Manager Lucien Metommo had his birthday on his mind all through the AFCON 2019 April and days after his birthday celebration Cameroon beat Guinea in the final to win the crown.

12)Should Cameroon win the trophy, it will be the country’s first World Cup trophy.
