Malawian forward Gerald Keith Phiri Jr has announced his retirement from international Football with immediate effect.
The 28-year old Al Hilal Omdurman striker made public the decision on December 31 without reasons.
We understand the forward has opted to stay from the national selection for an unspecified duration as part of response for not being in his country’s 28-man squad for the tournament.
The striker who has featured for his country on 44 occasions and scored ten goals may never play for his country again.
Papa as he is fondly called had been on the News late last month for criticizing the tactics of Malawi national team coach Marian Mario Marina.
The former Caps United and Bidvist forward will have to watch Malawi’s return to the AFCON from home.
Malawi will be competing in Group B of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and will be facing Senegal, Zimbabwe and Guinea Conakry at the Kouekong Omnisport Stadium in Bafoussam.
The Malawian Flames who will be in their third appearance in the final phase of the AFCON tournament.
The Southeastern Africans who’s only two AFCON participations in 1984 and 2010 ended at the group stage of the competition.
The team will be expected to jet into Cameroon early next week a few days to the start of the 2021 AFCON that will run in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022.
