After earning a dream qualification for the 33rd edition of the TotalErnegies AFCON 2021, the Coelacanthes in an impressive game style displayed failed to pick up a lead against the Panthers of Gabon who opened score at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. The Gabonese recorded their first goal at the 16th minutes of play from a strong and lightening shot by Qatar’s Al Arabi forward Aaron Boupendza.
The Comoros unstoppable flank accelerations championed by max-man Ben Mohamed and Kassim saw the Gabonese stopper Amonome panicking and shivering on several occasions.
The last 15th minutes of the Gabonese head to head match against Comoros, saw a more domineering Coelacanthes side in ball possession and play style. Very precise in their passes, with good dribbling techniques, Ben Mohamed found it tough to deliver the salvatory goal as end time drew closed.
The tiny archipelago nation of Comoros had been preparing for its debut on the continent’s biggest stage. The dream of reaching at the finals of the African Cup of Nations finals became a reality in March 2021 after a typically hard-fought zero-zero draw against Togo.
The story of Comoros’ unlikely success can be traced back to 2014 , when head coach Amir Abdou took over with a new vision for the team.
With the limited football infrastructural development, coach Amir chose to lean on the nation’s diaspora, particularly in France, to find the best set of players.
Located just off the eastern coast of Africa and fourth smallest country with a population of less than 900,000, the little island occupants will take on Morocco on January 14th , at the 42,500 Omnisport stadium in their next crucial game.
