The Confederation of African Football CAF’s President Dr Patrice Motsepe has encouraged all to work in close collaboration with CAF for a successful organisation of the second 24 Nations Tournament.
TotalEnergies AFCON 2021 will kickstart come Sunday January 9, 2021, with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon taking on the Stallions of Burkina Faso at the ultra-modern Olembe Stadium in the country’s political capital Yaounde.
Dr Patrice Motsepe was speaking to the press before a gala game between Members of CAF Executive Committee and FIFA Sponsors played at the Reunification Stadium in Douala Saturday January 8, 2021. To him the population should be on the watch for the organising committee for a succesful AFCON hosting.
“Part of our ambition is to ensure that your experience here is a pleasurable one. As things are going on, if there are things we are making mistakes, tells and we will correct them”
His call comes days after prominent media professional Mamadou Gaye was sacked as an AFCON Media Officer by CAF Secretary General Veron Musengo-Omba for raising complaints about poor working conditions online as reported.
Cameroon’s hosting of this Continental bonanza from on-set has raised so many eyebrows. Some pundits stemmed up to criticise the country for not being ready to host the competition while others condemned the facilities provided as well as the time. But the determination of CAF President, the Local Organizing Committee COCAN has finally materialised with Cameroon hosting.
Cameroon is hosting the second 24 Nations tournament after Egypt in 2019. The competition will run from January 9 to February 6, 2022, across five cities and six sites.
The hosting of this competition comes 50 years after, since Cameroon lastly hosted in 1972, with just eight teams, 16 matches and 53 goals scored. Congo emerged as champions.
Thus this is an opportunity as a football nation, five times champions of Africa to showcase what the central African carries.
