It wasn’t a smooth road for the Eagles of Mali en-route the 2020 Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) final.
Mali finished top of Group A ahead of the Intermediate Lions of Cameron before weathering the storm of Congo Brazaville and possessive Guinea respectively (both on penalties) in the quarter and semi-finals of the tournament.

Mali 1-0 Burkina Faso (Bagayoko 70′)
Cameroon 1-1 Mali (Banga 6′, Samake 12′)
Mali 1-0 Zimbabwe (Diallo 11′)
Quarterfinal
Mali 0-0 Congo Brazaville (5-4 penalties)
Samake, Kyabou, Samabali, Doumba, and Coulibaly all converted their penalties for Mali while Mapata missed for Congo Brazaville.
Semifinal
Mali 0-0 Guinea (5-4 penalties)
The same five players that converted their spot-kicks against Congo Brazaville also scored their penalties for Mali while Morlaye Sylla missed his spot-kick for Guinea.
