After emerging as the first country to qualify for back to back (consecutive) finals at the ongoing Total African Nations Championship (CHAN 2020) holding in Cameron, defending Champions, Atlas Lions of Morocco on Sunday will try to break another tournament record.
Since the first edition of CHAN in 2009, no country has ever won it back to back (consecutively).
Morocco’s final game against Mali will allow them to become the first country to win the tournament back to back after defeating Nigeria 4-0 in 2018 final to win their first trophy.
If the Atlas Lions eventually win the trophy on Sunday, they will become the second country to win the tournament twice after the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) who won the trophy in 2009 and 2016.
Coach Ammouta and his wards will approach the final game with a glimpse of history at their disposal.
Time will tell if they can rewrite CHAN history or allow the Eagles of Mali to win their first CHAN trophy after their defeat to DR Congo in 2016.
With four wins and a draw from their five games thus far coupled with a superb attack that has produced 13 goals, the odds are in Morocco’s favour to retain their title.
