The Ghana Olympics Committee has stated that they may pull out of the Olympics games if things don’t get better.
In an interview with Accra- based Atinka FM’s Sports show dubbed, Atinka Total Sports, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah , the president of Ghana Olympics Committee gave an account on the his outfit has taken.
Mr. Nunoo Mensah explained that they have considered to pull out if the situation around the world does not get better.
“If international Olympics committee insists on going ahead with Olympics Games in this condition we will have no option than to pull out because we are independent GOC, we cant expose our athletes to the Corona virus”. He said
“But the President of the International Olympics committee has indicated that they’re monitoring the situation, they will take a decision as and when its needed” He added
“Initially they said we should monitor the situation for a while because we have four months ahead of us, but now they said we should monitor the situation for the next month if things do not change we will postpone it.
He further explained that he had an engagement with the International Olympics Committee president and suggested to him that when the situation gets better in Japan and is not stable in the other countries, it should be postponed.
He said the president agreed with him but told him that they will be monitoring the situation and will be waiting for advice from the taskforce.
“But when I had personal engagement with the President of IOC, I raised concern that even if the situation becomes better in Japan but worse in other parts of the world like Europe and America don’t you think we should still postpone the Olympics?
“He agreed with me but instead we should monitor the situation and allow the Task force to advice us on what we should do.
The 2020 Olympics games (Tokyo 2020) is set to begin on Friday , July 24 to 9th August, 2020.
