Write Karl Toko-Ekambi off at your peril. The Cameroonian goal poacher was back at his spectacular best with a brace in Lyon’s 3-2 victory away at Strasbourg this Sunday afternoon in match-day seven of the French Ligue 1.
The former Villarreal forward, 28, doubled Lyon’s lead in the 25th minute, benefiting from an assist from Memphis Deepay to make it 2-0 after Tino Kadewere had put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute.
Things got even better for Toko-Ekambi on the stroke of half-time, with Memphis turning provider on the edge of box before the former took matters into his own hands.
Toko-Ekambi spun his marker with ease before curling a sumptuous right-footed drive into the corner of the net, with goalkeeper Bingourou Kamara looking on helpless in the Strasbourg goal.
Though Lyon looked to be cruising, the contest was far from over.
Habib Diallo pulled one back two minutes before half-time.
The first key moment of the second segment was in the 53rd minute when Karl Brilliant Toko-Ekambi saw yellow for his troubles, leaving coach Rudi Garcia with the responsibility of either replacing him to avoid a second yellow or leave him to look for his third of the day.
Ten minutes after the interval Ivorian midfielder Jean-Eudes Aholou made it 3-2 setting the stage for a nail-biting finale.
Toko played the entire game. He has now scored twice in six league games this season.
Lyon are 7th and host AS Monaco of Aurélien Tchouameni next weekend.
