Olympique Lyonnais of Indomitable Lions of Cameroon forward Karl Toko-Ekambi Louis Brilliant scored as his side picked up a crucial victory against Girondin of Bordeaux in match-day 20 of the French Ligue 1 championship on Friday.
In-form forward Karl Toko-Ekambi was amongst the scorers as Lyon destroyed Bordeaux’s plans of getting a good result from their visit to the Groupama Stadium.
Toko-Ekambi scored the opener in the 32nd minutes of the game concluding an individual move.
Ekambi’s responsibility to lead Lyon from the sharp point of the attack had yielded fruits again.
Though the first goal for the host came at a time to easily unsettled visitors Bordeaux, the boys of coach Jean-Louis Gasset remained steadfast to prevent conceding a second despite both sides having a pair of chances before the break.
At half-time, Lyon were leading but uncomfortable with the one goal lead.
Rightly, as Nigeria’s Samuel Kalu leveled scores for the visitors ten minutes after the break.
The equalizer provoked changes on the Lyon side as coach Rudi Garcia turned to his bench to find fresh energy.
Ekambi came off in the 63rd minute, leaving his place for Maxwell Cornet.
The changes took time to yield the desired results. It was only in the 91st minute that Léo Dubois made Lyon’s pressure get its reward by scoring second in the 91st minute.
The victory is Lyon’s 13th in 22 games this season. They have played parity in seven – losing just twice.
Lyon are atop with 46 points, a point better than second seeded PSG who have a game in hand.
28-year-old Toko-Ekambi has scored ten goals and provided five assists in 18 French Ligue 1 games this season.
Lyon challenge Dijon in their next league outing on February 3.
