Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Timothée has issued a caution message calling on all stakeholders to ensure all is safe before resumption of hostilities in the English Premier League.
Speaking to kick442.com this Saturday, the 38-year-old versatile left back reiterated the need to exercise patience though fans including himself are impatient about seeing the premier league stars back on the pitch.
“Well talking about the request to resume the championship I think that like the players, the supervisors and all the football authorities are anxious.
This week premier league clubs unanimously voted for resumption of the championship which halted in the month of March following the outbreak of the CoronaVirus pandemic.
“They want to resume but security is paramount. Not only for the actors but for all everybody involved. Those who make football a king sport in the world are the fans, the officials, the supplementary staff and players. They must take necessary steps to resume activities in such a way that their safety is a priority. As soon as that is possible then we are good to go. But we also know that in the current context the government is taking over so if the politicians and the sportsmen are for the resumption of the Premier League, we the fans are impatient”
Atouba spent the 2004/2005 season at the White Hart Lane making 18 Premier League appearances before leaving for Bundesliga side SV Hamburg.
The current team manager of the intermediate Lions of Cameroon is also worried about how players will perform upon resumption.
“What keeps a player in shape is the training and the competition. The repetition of these two processes allow a player to achieve constant performances worthy of a high level sportsman. So in my opinion it will take time to regain the level they had because we are talking about performance not talent so they will have to redo a preparation like a resumption of the season to be able to reproduce the same performances” Atouba told kick442.com.
The ex Cameroon international’s worries are raised at a time when former Manchester United defender Garry Neville has requested the league be taken to another country.
“If the Premier League were really serious about delivering the matches that remain in the safest environment, they would move it to one of the two or three spots that are within three or four hours of this country that are coronavirus-free, or virtually CoronaVirus-free” He told kick off.
With nine games left, it is difficult to see how clubs will engage in preparation before resumption as Atouba has recommended.
The one-time FC Basel defender enjoyed a 12 year successful career in Europe representing Ajax Amsterdam, Las Palmas, Xamax amongst others.
Atouba won 44 caps for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
He was a key component of the generation of the Indomitable Lions team that won the AFCON in 2000 and unfortunately finished runners-up in the 2003 FIFA Confederations cup.
Liverpool are Premier League champions in-waiting with a 25-points gap at the top needing just 6 points to end their 30-years wait for the title.
