Born in Douala, Cameroon, Timothée Atouba Essama was one of Cameroon’s flying left backs during his days in the lions den.
He started his senior career with MINEDUC in 1998 before joining Union Douala a year later. Atouba’s first stop out of the country was in the Swiss Super league where he spent two years with Neuchâtel Xamax and another two years with FC Basel.
In 2004, Atouba Essama left FC Basel for Tottenham Hotspur in England where he made 18 appearances, scoring one goal. He later left Tottenham just a year later and had spells with Hamburger SV in Germany, Ajax and Las Palmas.
Timothée Atouba Essama made his first cap for Cameroon aged 17, on February 28th, 1999.
Atouba was part of the Cameroon squad that won the 2000 African Nations Cup in Nigeria.
During the 2003 Confederations Cup in France,Timothée Atouba took part in all five matches in the tournament. He featured in the finals where Cameroon was beaten 1#0 by host France.
His close to 10 years career with the indomitable lions of Cameroon ended on September 06th 2008. He made 44 appearances for the national team.
Timothée Atouba won a total of 10 trophies and scored 23 goals for club and country playing either as a left back or as a midfielder.
His dead ball execution abilities and versatility left him more often than not in the position half.
There are even stories that his attacking desire caused some his coaches to create artificial barriers for him to limit the number of occasions he was in the opposition half per game.
His precision passing made coaches play him in the attacking midfield role occasionally.
These attributes alongside the work ethics of the Ex Tottenham and Hamburg man places him amongst references in the left back role and leaves him as a mentor to the next generation.
The 38-year-old one time Ajax Amsterdam defender currently serves as the team manager of Cameroon’s intermediate Lions team.
