One of the most sought after goalkeepers in Europe Andre Onana Onana is expected to make a big decision this summer as multiple European clubs clamor for his signature.
The Ajax goalkeeper is likely to pick his next home from a range of adorable options.
Just like in 2015 Andre is bound to make a big decision with his departure from Ajax looking like a sure event. Exiting Ajax means he has to leave a great European club again because there is new challenge elsewhere.
Strange enough there is need to go back to the past as reports have emerged from ‘The Athletic’ that he was once a transfer target for Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Athletic have it that Arsenal and Liverpool were monitoring Onana’s situation as he got increasingly got frustrated. The goalkeeper endured lack of chances in his five years at Barcelona’s La Masia where he felt he was starved of even football made for Barcelona’s reserve team.
As this frustration grew Liverpool and Arsenal kept their eyes on the situation.
Unfortunately before Liverpool and Arsenal knew it Onana was in Amsterdam.
“The decision to leave Barcelona and join Ajax was a risky one”, Onana’s friend and former team-mate Clyde Essomba has revealed to The Athletic.”Mentally Andre is strong and he knew what he wanted. He knew if it didn’t work he will be criticized but he took a bold decision”
Onana took his destiny into his hands in 2015 when he ignored Barcelona’s desire to norture him and take him into the first team over time and decided to join Ajax.
Just like he had Barcelona, Liverpool and Arsenal lurking back then, he has multiple options now and must make a similar smart decision.
Since arriving Amsterdam, Andre has grown into one of the best goalkeepers in the world now aged 24. He has caught the eyes of multiple European giants amongst which is his ex club Barcelona.
The Cameroonian joined the Dutch side in 2015 from Barcelona B and became Ajax’s undisputable first choice keeper in the 2016/2017 season. Since then he has made 122 appearances in all competitions.
This season, he has been involved in 39 games, conceded 37 goals in all competitions with 15 clean sheets from 3500 minutes of football.
Onana arrived Europe through FC Barcelona’s La Masia in 2010 after a spell at the Samuel Eto’o Foundation [Fundesport]. He spent five years in the highly reputed Academy before leaving for Amsterdam. If that’s a routine then it is five years since he first came to Amsterdam, will he repeat his five year trick?
He has contributed in winning one dutch league title and a dutch domestic cup win for the Cryuiff Arena faithfuls.
Rumors of his departure from Amsterdam have reached unprecedented heights in the last six weeks. Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Barcelona, and PSG have all reportedly interested in the services of the Nkol Ngok native.
Reports say Ajax found his replacement in 21-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper Luís Manuel Arantes Maximiano on the books of Sporting.
Liverpool may have sorted their goalkeeping problems but Arsenal doesn’t have the same testimony and may still have the regret of not acting fast five years ago.
