The coach of the Atlas Lions of Morocco at the just concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN 2020), Hussein Ammouta says winning the final of the tournament was all about writing their history after getting to back to back finals.

“First of all, I will congratulate Mali and coach Diane Nouhoum for their run in the competition. Reaching the final is a feat. For us, we came here with a changed team by 75% and a new staff. So it was about writing our own story and winning for ourselves. Today’s final was difficult but we did the essential, won and I believe we merit the victory plus the trophy” Hussein Ammouta told journalists during the post-match press conference after guiding Morocco to a 2-0 victory over Mali in the final.

Coach Ammouta promised to bring in young players ahead of the next tournament if he is being retained as the CHAN team coach.

He said: “We came with some aging players for their experience. If I stay as head coach of this team before the next CHAN I will try to get onboard younger players.”

Goals from Soufianne Bouftini and captain, Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half sealed consecutive championship wins for the Atlas Lions as they emerged as the first country to reach consecutive finals and also win consecutive CHAN trophies.

They thereby joined the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) with two trophies to be the most successful teams in the tournament.
