Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has made some sensational revelation about their France 98 World Cup expedition.
The former Inter Milan defender has confessed that some Super Eagles players sneaked ‘African women’ into their hotel rooms a night before their disgraceful display in the round of 16 against Denmark.
Nigeria were the overwhelming favourites against a less fancied Danish side. But to the surprise of bookmakers and Eagles’ supporters the Danes made light work of the Nigerians with a 4-1 humiliation, in front of 77,000 fans at the Stade de France, in Paris.
West, revealed that some players brought women into their rooms on the night before the June 28, 1998 clash, and according to him that was hugely responsible for their debacle.
“I read reports about Eagles visiting nightclubs and driving limousines during the World Cup in France, honestly, I don’t know about that,” the now 46-year-old former Auxerre defender told Nigerian news outlet, The PUNCH.
“But what I know is that some players sneaked women into camp, I saw that. The women were Africans who came to watch the tournament and fell in love with our team, because of the way we played in the group stage. So, it was easy for these players to woo them to their rooms.
“That is why on match day, you could see a lot of the players didn’t have the strength to curtail the Danish players. They were tired after overworking themselves the night before with the women. I was yelling at them on the pitch, I was very angry with them.
“They did all these because they thought we were going to beat Denmark.”
Nigeria were in their second FIFA World Cup participation after making their debut in 1994 in the USA. Just like in USA 94 that they bowed out in the round of 16 to Italy, who went all the way to the final, this time they were booted out at the same stage but by a less fancied Denmark.
In 1994 they were ranked overall 9th in the especially after Italy only managed to beat them after extra time, unlike in 1998 that they were humiliated by Denmark, were ranked overall 12th in the tournament.
Taribo West made 42 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria between 1994 and 2005.
The native of Port Harcourt missed the 1994 AFCON triumph but was part of the team that finished second in 2000 when they lost the final to Cameroon.
The 1996 French league and Cup winner with Auxerre was also part of the Super Eagles team that won Gold in the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta.
