Nigerian Under 23 forward, Taiwo Awoniyi scored his second goal for his German Bundesliga side, Mainz in their 2-2 draw against the host, FC Koln on Sunday, May 17, 2020.
In a match involving two Nigerian players on either side, Kingsley Ehizibue for FC Koln while Awoniyi for Mainz, FC Koln raised to 2-0 lead via goals from Uth and Kainz in the 6th and 53rd minutes respectively before Mainz substitute, Taiwo Awoniyi started their fightback in the 61st minute as he pulled one goal back for his side after replacing Ji Dong-Won in the 56th minute. This will be Taiwo’s second goal for Mainz.
Pierre Kunde Malong scored the equalising goal for Mainz FC in the 72nd minute.
Taiwo Awoniyi compatriot, Kingsley Ehizibue replaced Schmitz in the 83rd minutes for FC Koln.
Taiwo represented Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and went on to win the tournament, scoring four goals during the competition. He also represented Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand after winning the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Senegal.
On 12 April 2015, he scored a brace on his debut for the Nigeria U-23 team in a match against Zambia, as his team went on to qualify for the 2015 All African Games.
He was selected by Nigeria for their 35-man provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
