Nine-time African Champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria were handed a 4-0 defeat to World and CONCACAF Champions, United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in an international friendly match on Saturday.
USWNT started the game with Alyssa Naeher, Alana Cook, Becky Sauerbrunn, Sofia Huerta, Mallory Pugh, Lindsey Horan, Sophia Smith, Alex Morgan, Rose Lavelle, Andi Sullivan, and Emily Fox.
Coach Randy Waldrum gave starting shirts to Chiamaka Nnadozie, Monday Gift, Osinachi Ohale, Glory Ogbonna, Uchenna Kanu, Toni Payne, Ifeoma Onumonu, Michelle Alozie, Christy Ucheibe, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Deborah Abiodun.
Portland Thorns Sofia Smith scored the first goal of the game for the USWNT in the 14th minute.
Lyon’s Lindsey Horan doubled the lead for USA before Sophia Smith scored her second goal of the game to increase the Americans’ lead to 3-0.
San Diego Wave’s Alex Morgan continued her goal-scoring form for both club and country as she increased her side’s lead to four in the 52nd minute from the penalty spot.
Alex Morgan has scored 13 goals in 15 games in the United States (US) National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) this season.
The goal was her 129th career International goal for the national team.
Nigeria and USWNT have both qualified for Australia/New Zealand 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and are using the friendly to fine-tune preparation for next year’s football Mundial.
USWNT pipped Canada 1-0 to win the CONCACAF Women’s Championships this year which qualify the team for the World Cup while Nigeria finished fourth at TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2022).
Both sides will meet again on September 6, 2022, in the second encounter.
