Host, Atlas Lionesses of Morocco edged the Burkina Faso women’s national team 1-0 in the opening game of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Captain and ASFAR FC player, Ghizlane Chebbak’s first-half goal separated both sides after 90 minutes.
She converted a free kick in the 29th minute which was not quickly reacted to by Burkina Faso goalkeeper Mariam Ouattara.
The referee had initially consulted the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to determine whether the infringement leading to the free-kick was a free kick or penalty before making her decision.
Morocco became the seventh different host nation since the inception of the WAFCON to win their opening match of the competition after defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 on Saturday in Rabat.
The win was Morocco’s WAFCON win since its 4-1 win over Egypt in its debut appearance at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna in 2000.
Morocco moved to the top of Group A with three points after the opening game and will next face Senegal and Uganda in the group.
