Edo Queens suffered their second defeat of the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.
An eighth-minute free-kick from Abideen Suliat gave Sunshine Queens the lead.
In the 20th minute, Elizabeth Zirike equalised for Edo Queens against her former Club with a long-range strike from about 25 yards.
When Edo Queens thought they had come back into the game, Abigail Sunday keyed into Aminat Yakubu’s strike to score the winning goal for Sunshine Queens.
Sunshine has four points from two games while Edo Queens is without a point.
Edo Queens’ coach, Stanley Osaze Francis says he is disappointed with the result but hopeful that his wards can bounce back from their consecutive defeats.
“We are disappointed as a team. The girls are and the coaches as well as the management. It is football in which case we win some and lose some. We are going to work on the next game and see what will happen next. The team still has a chance to qualify. In football sometimes, the players might not take to instructions. We committed some blunders from the goalkeeper leading to two mistakes and we didn’t take our chances. Obidinma Nkiruka replacing Christy Ohiaeriaku was a tactical change. Everybody just has to play for the team.”
Sunshine Queen’s coach who is also Super Falcons Assistant coach, Wemimo Mathew is elated with the result and support from Ondo State Government with a 50,000 Naira reward for each goal scored by the team.
“I feel so happy and excited. Irrespective of the win, we still have to work on some areas as far as the team is concerned. The financial motivation from the government has helped the players. That shows that the government is behind us and we are happy about it.”
For Edo Queens’s captain, Glory Ogbonna the result was not what was expected.
“The result wasn’t what we planned for. We planned to win, but it’s football and anything can happen. We couldn’t take our chances. It’s just for us to go back and keep working hard. If we can win all our three games, we can still match up with our opponents.”
Sunshine Queens’ captain, Onyebuchi Goodness was spiritual in her post-match reaction.
She said: “I am very happy and grateful to God Almighty. It can only be Jesus for us to achieve this because we can’t do it by our strength. We expect to keep winning our games.”
Edo Queens and Sunshine Queens will play three more games at the 2021 NWFL Premiership Super Six in a bid to win the league and qualify for the Inaugural Total CAF Women’s Champions League.
