Mamelodi Sundowns captain Denis Onyango has become the most decorated player in the history of the Premier Soccer League with nine trophies to his name.
The former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper achieved the feat after Sundowns drew goalless with Cape Town City on Wednesday to clinch the 2021/22 PSL title, albeit, with four games to spare.
On 58 points, Masandawana are 13 points above second-placed Royal AM who are on 45 points. It is Masandawana’s 12th league title and their fifth in a row.
To becoming the most decorated player in the history of the competition, Onyango skipped away from the club’s former captain Hlompho Kekana who retired with eight league titles.
The 36-year-old goal-minder won three league titles with SuperSport United while he has won the other six with Brazilians.
His first three league crowns were consecutive at SuperSport in 2007/08, 2008/09, and 2009/10 seasons respectively.
At Loftus Versfeld with the Ka bo Yellow, the former SC Villa custodian first won it in the 2015/16 season before winning it on the bounce in 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22.
Kekana also won his first two trophies with SuperSport in 2019 and 2010 adding six while with Sundowns between 2011 and 2021.
Anthony Laffor and Tebogo Langerman are the other players that have won more than five PSL titles, they are both tied on six.
Laffor’s first two came while he was still at SuperSport in 2009 and 2010 while he went on to add four as a Mamelodi player.
Langerman also won his first two with SuperSport in 2009 and 2010 before he added four at Sundowns between 2014 and 2019.
