- Sebastien Haller’s goal against Benfica on Wednesday made him the only footballer from Africa to score 11 goals in a single UEFA Champions league season.
- The ex-Auxerre man is also the only player in the competition’s history to score in seven consecutive games.
- He has binned records set by Samuel Eto’o,Mohamed Salah and now closing on Cristiano Ronaldo’s.
Ivory Coast forward, Sebastien Haller has become the first and only African to score 11 goals in a single UEFA champions league season.
The Ivorian achieved the feat after netting in Ajax of Amsterdam’s 2-2 against Benfica in the first-leg of the round of 16 game for the 2021/2022 season on Wednesday February 24, 2021.
The former West Ham United striker netted Ajax’s second goal of the strange night in which he initially scored against his side in the 26th minute.
On an exciting night in Portugal, former Everton forward Dusan Tadic better the opener for the 1996 Champions 18 minutes in. His side’s opener of the night lasted just six minutes before Haller leveled with an own goal.
It took just three minutes for the big Ivorian to restore his side’s advantage with Ajax’s second on the night.
A 72nd minute strike from Roman Yaremchuk was the final highlight of the dramatic night in which both sides settled for a draw. Yaremchuk who celebrated by pulling off his jersey at the expense of a booking closed the scoring but the talking point was Haller’s 11th UEFA Champions League goal.
The striker scored in all of Ajax’s six matches of the group phase this term, netting against Sporting, Besiktas, Borussia Dortmund at home and away to help Ajax qualify for the round of 16 with six wins in six outings before adding another last night.
Haller breaks Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s record
Last night’s goal also saw the Ivory Coast forward better the record of scoring ten goals in single a campaign set by Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in the 2017-2018 season.
Sebastien Haller has been in on fine form for Ajax of Amsterdam this season. The forward has scored 29 goals and provided six assists in 29 games in all competitions for the club since the start of the 2021/2022 campaign in Europe.
This run has seen the Ivorian Elephant equaling and or beating several records also including those of Africans, amongst them, that of Samuel Eto’o who he recent displaced to become all-time leading African scorer in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
This, after matching and bypassing Samuel Eto’o Fils’ eight goal record. A mark the former Cameroon Indomitable Lions set while playing for Italian side, Inter Milan during the 2010/2011 UCL campaign.
Haller could be extend his African record and target Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals scored in the 2013-2014 season.
