Newly retired former Indomitable Lions master goal poacher Samuel Eto’o Fils has claimed that he thinks he is the best player ever to hail from the African continent, barely a few days after dusting his playing boots.
According to the 38 year old native of Nkon, no better player has ever come from the continent who matches his standards.
“I know that someone else will come and do better than me, I know I am not eternal. I also know that I was a unique player. I am the best player in Africa. The others know it and must accept it, Eto’o said in an interview with RFI.
Eto’o’s illustrious professional football career began in 1997 with Real Madrid and and ended in 2019 with Qatar SC, spanning 21 years.
He played for 14 clubs in Europe and Asia, notably for Mallorca, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Anzhi Makhachkala Chelsea, Everton, Sampdoria, Antalyaspor and Qatar SC.
He helped Cameroon to two AFCON wins and an Olympic Gold Medal, won three UEFA Champions League trophies, was voted African Player of the year four times, won domestic league and cup titles in Spain and Italy, was voted third in 2006 in the World player of the year awards, behind Ronaldinho and Franck Lampard, amongst other collective and individual awards.
Eto’o’s claim might be argued by who wants to argue, especially with other African greats like George Weah, Roger Milla, Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Jay Jay Okocha and many others with claims of their own.
The all time top scorer in the African Cup of Nations and Cameroon’s all time leading goal scorer for the Indomitable Lions certainly has a case for his claim which can be won without a defense counsel, his CV will judge for him.
