On Friday 24th May 2019, the Vatican hall was turned into a football stadium as thousands of soccer lovers met pope Francis.
There were many football stars who attended the conference among them were prominent names like Clerence Seedorf, Samuel Eto’o, Javier Zanetti and Claudio Ranieri.
More than 5000 children from Italy attended the event that was aimed at talking football and it’s positive values. Here, the children listen attentively as their heroes tell their stories.
During the meeting, the Pontiff underlined the meaning of sport for children.
“Behind a rolling ball, there is often a boy with his dreams and his aspirations. Sports does not only involve the muscles of a boy but the personality in all its dimensions, even the deepest ones. Soccer is a team sport and that’s good for everyone. Many people define soccer to be the most beautiful game in the world… I think so too” said the pope.
Organized under the title “The soccer that we love”, pope Francis urged parents to educate their children about soccer even if they won’t be champions.
He also took the opportunity to tell stars of the game like Samuel Etoo, Clerence Seedorf and Janvier Zanetti to be an example to children.
At the end of the conference, retired soccer player Janvier Zanetti said “he is a pope who loves soccer very much. He is a passionate fan of San Lorenzo in Argentina. This fact always fills us with pride.”
To Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, “there has been talk of soccer, of sport, of inclusion, playing and having fun. It’s been a beautiful day.”
Pope Francis has never exercise this love for soccer in his reign as the Pontiff. He thinks that soccer is not just a sport but a universal language and a school of values.
