Manchester City and Algeria winger has re-emphasized his club’s and the players desire to break the jinx in the UEFA’s flagship European clubs football competition.
In a recent interview with Goalscorer.com, the two times Premier League winner re-echoed Pep Guardiola’s boys desire to win the prestigious UEFA Champions League trophy they have had in mind since the start of the Sheikh Mansour’s Manchester City project over 12 years ago.
City hold a 2-1 advantage over Real Madrid in the 16th final of the competition since a win at the Bernabeu and Mahrez believes it is the moment for the City players to shine.
“I think it’s a good time to win the Champions League. We have the team, we have the coach, we have everything. It’s a good time. I don’t know if we are the best, but we are good enough to win it. The Champions League is difficult, everyone wants to win it, so it will be a great battle,” Mahrez stated.
City swept pass opponents in the group stage of this year’s competition winning 14 points from 18 in Group C and remain unbeaten.
The 2016 semi finalist City hope to knockout Real Madrid and why not go all the way after multiple failed attempts.
Mahrez has been a hit at the Etihad Stadium. The left-footed winger has scored 21 goals and recorded 26 assists in 81 games at the Manchester club.
The Sarcelles native has picked four trophies at the blue half of Manchester including a second Premier League crown since he arrived the club in July 2018.
The former Le Havre man captained the Desert Foxes of Algeria to their first AFCON success in 19 years during the 2019 tournament in Egypt.
He has developed into an important part of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team.
