One of the oldest members of the the Gambia football federation, GFF, Real de Banjul has written to the Gambia federation to inform the mother football institution in the country to inform them they will not represent the country in next season’s CAF Champions League.
We understand the club is unhappy about the fact that the Federation opted to endorse their being the country’s ambassador in the competition because they were league leaders before abandonment but denied them the title and the tag of champions.
A recent release signed by officials of the club spell out the Club’s worries;
“Real Banjul has written to the Gambia football federation, not accepting the offer to represent the Gambia in next season’s CAF Champions League.
Real de Banjul is not only one of the oldest members of the GFF, we have always played a cardinal role in the development of football in the Gambia by following the laws and rules of the game. We have invested in all aspects of football development, support the GFF to the best of our ability at all times.
The club does not want its reputation and those of its members to be unfairly tainted. We feel that the club should have been crowned champions when the season was abandoned” A club statement read.
The GFF nullified the Gambia top-flight Championship on May 13 naming Real de Banjul and Armed Forces as the country’s representatives in the CAF Champions League and Confederation cup respectively.
The move from Real of Banjul is certainly not what the GFF wants at a time when the world intensifies the battle against the deadly CoronaVirus pandemic.
