PWD legends and unfortunate finalists of the 1979 Cameroon cup, Joseph Agwa and Nji Sunday, say it is a dream come true for them to touch the Cameroon cup trophy, 43_years after they came close to winning it.
The new generation of Abakwa Boys headed by coach David Pagou, have succeeded where Agwa, Nji Sunday and Co failed in 1979.
Chem Herbert’s lone goal at the 15 minute, secured a historic win for the Abakwa Boys, who were in their third cup final.
Their triumphant return to Bamenda on Thursday afternoon was greeted by thousands of fans, amongst whom were former goalkeeper Joseph Agwa and Nji Sunday, who featured in the 1979 final.
“I’m very happy for seeing the cup. Even if I die today, I’m very happy for what the boys have done for me and my colleagues and the population of the North West Region,” Agwa Joseph said during the trophy presentation at commercial Avenue Bamenda.
“I didn’t come out of the house for about a week, regretting that I will go down without seeing this cup of Cameroon, luckily my children have come behind with the trophy for me. It is a dream come true to touch the Cameroon cup,” he added.
Joseph Agwa was at goal in 1979, when PWD suffered a three_one defeat to Dynamo of Douala.
“In 1979 we struggled to win the cup but we failed. Today these young players have done something which is good. I say congratulations to them,” One of the 1979 finalist, Nji Sunday said.
Nji Sunday however thinks that conditions now are far better than was the case in their days.
“Things are changing, in our days they were giving us 200frs for food money but now that’s no longer the case.”
PWD is the 25th team to win the Cameroon cup trophy. Their victory over Astres on Sunday automatically qualifiers the Abakwa Boys for the 2022_2023 CAF Confederation cup.
