The Secretary General of the Cameroon football federation has issued a release on Wednesday, September 21 informing the general public and direct stakeholders that 2021 cup of Cameroon winners, PWD Social Club of Bamenda will confrront 2022 MTN Elite One champions, Cotonsport of Garoua in the latest edition of the Trophy of Champions next month in Bafoussam.
According to the release the October 12 season kicker will be played at the Kouekong Stadium in Bafoussam between the two great clubs.
PWD who conquered Astres Astres 1-0 to claim their first ever cup of Cameroon trophy in March this year will battle for another trophy against Coton who defeated Eding on penalties to claim their 17th domestic title in July.
Both clubs will compete for another silverware in the second week of October, thus renewing an age-old rivalry.
Last season, PWD defeated eventual champions Coton and played a draw in another of their two league fixture but this Super cup game like others can go either way.
Last week Coton eliminated Matlama of Lesotho in the first round preliminary of this season’s CAF Champions League while PWD bowed out of the Confederation cup at the expense of Malagalsy side Elgeco Plus.
The game is an opportunity for coach Gabriel Haman’s Coton to oil their winning momentum while for Martin Nkabyo and his team it is some sort of a chance for redemption.
Though plans for the big event are already on, Cotonsport who play the final of the 2022 cup of Cameroon on October 2 will cause the postponement of the Super cup.
Cotonsport face Bamboutos FC in the cup of Cameroon final, before traveling South Africa to face Royal Leopards FC of ESwantini five later.
Unfortunately, CAF has scheduled the return-leg of the crucial fixture against Leopards on October 15 in Garoua, barely three days after the FECAFOOT-planned champions trophy game.
Whenever the game is finally played, the fixture will provide an opportunity for the clubs concerned to add another trophy to their cabinet.
The last edition of the Cameroon Super Cup was played between UMS and Stade Renard in October 2019 and latter who were the 2019 cup of Cameroon winners won it by 3-1.
