Black Queens of Ghana midfielder, Priscilla Okyere has said that Real Madrid coach and French legend, Zinedine Zidane is her role model. She disclosed this to the Confederation of African Football, CAF as she shared her beautiful story.
“I chose football because I have the passion. Anytime that I am in school and I see guys playing, I just love to play. I do watch Zinedine Zidane, so I chose him as my role model even though I am a female. I chose Zidane because I love the way he played. Anytime I see him play, I loved it and I see that passion. I wanted to one day become like him.” She said.
The 24-year-old midfielder also spoke on her family background and challenges from her parents when she took to playing football.
“I come from a family with six siblings. Three brothers and three sisters. When you are a woman and wanted to play football, people will criticize you because they think football is only for men. In my family, my father was not supportive. My mum was also like 50/50 because if my father doesn’t want me to play, she can’t push me because there is no money.”
The former ŽFK Spartak Subotica and Rayo Vallecano player advised girls and women that want to play football to follow their dreams and never give up.
“What I want to tell girls out here is that we all have our dreams. I chose football, that is my dream. If they also choose football or any other thing, there is no work on this earth that is only meant for men. I want to encourage the young girls out there who want to play football or have chosen football as their career that they should never give up. No matter what the situation may be. People will start criticizing and say what they know but they shouldn’t give up on their dreams because I know that if they push hard and fight for what they believe in, one day, we are all going to smile and be happy. They will see their dreams come true.” She concluded.
Priscilla Okyere represented Ghana at the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations, AWCON on home soil, playing just two games at the tournament. She currently plays for Gintra Universitetas in Lithuania.
