Cameroon will clash with Guinea for the second and final time in the Total 2019 Under 17 AFCON tournament in Tanzania this Sunday. The game will be a remake of the first group B game which Cameroon won by 2 goals to nil on the 15th of April 2019 at Chamazi.Sunday’s clash will be first appearance for Guinea in this stage of the competition after finishing 3rd on 3 occasions (1995,2015 & 2017).
Cameroon on their part have won the trophy once in 2003 and lost 1 final in 2009 meaning the African Football giants will be making their third appearance in the final of the prestigious competition.
Both Nations have an enviable history in the competition. Guinea is participating for the 7th time since the official start of the competition in 1995 same with Cameroon.
Guinea participated made their debut in the competition in the maiden edition in 1995 and were nearly the most admired team in the tournament as they beat Mali by 2 goals to 1 after extra time to finish 3rd in that edition of the competition.
That brilliant 1995 performance was followed by 2 absences in 1997 & 1999. But in 1999,while Guinea were watching from home Cameroon qualified and participated in the tournament for the very first time. That Cameroon team sailed through to the group stage of the competition with 5 points from 9, without a defeat but unfortunately accepted a semi final defeat to Ghana and a third place playoff defeat to Mali to finish 4th in that edition of the competition.
In 2001 both Nations qualified and participated in the competition together in the tournament for the first time but never faced each other. The great Guinea team then was so unfortunate not to play the final of the competition, the defeated Burkina Faso by 2 goals to 1 in the semi final and qualified for the final only for Guinea to be disqualified from the competition after FIFA sanctioned the country due to Government interference in Football management and financial irregularities. Unfortunately for the Cameroon team then, they were sent home by their group stage results.
In 2003 Guinea came to the competition but failed to impress as they exited the competition in the group stage but Cameroon was on fine form in the competition as they went all the way to win their first title.
The 2005 & 2007 editions of the tournament were without both nations as they failed to qualify for the tournament. Cameroon will reappear in the tournament and finish runners up to Ghana in the absence of Guinea in 2009 before missing the next two editions(2011 & 2013) of the competition just like Guinea. Both Nations qualified again for the tournament in 2015 to end Guinea’s 12 years absence and Cameroon’s 6 years absence.
The 2015 participation of Guinea in the competition ended with Bronze medal (3rd place finish) while Cameroon went back empty handed after exiting in the group stage and the same scenario occurred in 2017. The particularity of the 2017 competition is that these two nations finally met for the first time in the history of the competition in a group stage game that ended 1 all in Gabon. Steve Mvoue’s brother,Stephane Zobo scored that day for Cameroon.

It promises to be great game between the boys of coach Thomas Libih of Cameroon and Mohamed Maleah Camara of Guinea to be decided on little details.
A win for Cameroon today will make the country the 5th nation to win the trophy twice while a first trophy win for Guinea will make them the 8th country to win it
