Liberia’s President George Weah trained with Liberia’s Lone Stars on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations preliminary round first leg game against Chad at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

The 53- year -old former striker helped Liberia to the 1996 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nation finals and believes his presence could inspire the squad to qualify for the continental biennial football event for the first time in 17 years.

The three time African player of the year ( 1989, 1994, 1995 ) remains the only African footballer to win the FIFA World player of the year in 1995 and also won the Ballon d’or.

Liberia are poised for another exploit after 18-year- teenage keeper Ashley Williams saved a stoppage time penalty in Sierra Leone last month as Liberia qualified for the group phase of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

George Weah ended a brilliant 18 year professional career in 2003 scoring 13 goals in 53 caps for country.
