35-year-old Jonathan McKinstry is faced with a delimma about picking his squad for the 2020 African Nations Championship in Cameroon.
The 28-man squad of home Uganda-based players participating in the Pre-CHAN Mini Tournament involving Cameroon, Niger, Zambia and Uganda, January 1-7, 2021 have shown they can do the job.
Cranes separated with the Intermediate lions on matchday one in a 1#1 game. Day two in the green turf of Amadou Ahidjo Annex1 stadium, they recorded a 2#0 victory over Zambia.
Ready to win, and all good performances, it makes it difficult for the head coach to make a final squad for the CHAN.
“All our players have come to say we want a place in the final squad for CHAN, so it is definitely difficult choices for the coaches to make now”
This time Uganda will be hoping to flee from their shells to go pass the group stage which has been the height of their four time participation in the CHAN
“Going into the CHAN, our mentality is why not us. Uganda have been at almost every CHAN and when we look at the players we have, the energy within the group and its why not us, why can it not be us in the semi finals or the final. We need a bit of luck to do that, but we feel confident at the moment”
The cranes are drawn in pool C alongside Morocco, Rwanda and Togo.
They are expected to take on Niger Thursday January 7, 2021 in their last game for the Pre-CHAN.
