The outbreak of CoronaVirus, COVID-19 pandemic has led to the disruption of major sporting activities in which the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL Premiership is an integral part. This has led to the postponement of the kick-off date of the league.

Delta Queens attacking midfielder, Popoola Mary is in support of the postponement of league games across the nation as she opined that the health of players is very important at these trying times.

She said this during an exclusive chat with kick442.com

“I support the postponement of the league because our life is more important to us. We need to stay safe so that our health won’t be tampered with. It is good that the NWFL and Nigeria Football Federation, NFF in collaboration with the Sports Ministry has taken the decision to halt all football activities across Nigeria for the time being.” She said.

“We don’t know when the league will kick off. We can be asked to start training and prepare for a new kick-off date at any time, so one has to be fit. In order to stay fit, I am doing indoor fitness training to keep fit by myself.”

The former Rising Queens, Sunshine Queens, Jokodolu Babes, Sure Babes, and Moje Queens player is optimistic that Delta Queens will push for the league title when the league kicks off hopefully after COVID-19 pandemic.

“I joined Delta queens in the second half of last season when I didn’t sign with them due to my registration. I feel sad for us not qualifying for super 4 and by the grace of God Delta queens will qualify for Super 4 this season. From there we can try our best to ensure that we win the league.” She concluded.

Delta Queens will be without their best player of last season in Ghanaian midfielder, Patience Adjetey who is currently with Ghana Army Ladies. It is hoped that Popoola Mary will be able to step into the shoes of Patience Adjetey who emerged as the midfielder of the 2018-2019 Season at Naija Women’s Football League Awards.
