South Africa’s head coach Molefi Ntseki was left disappointed after in-form Polokwane City goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe turned down a call up to join Bafana and rather opted to represent Zambia.
South Africa were forced to look for another goalkeeper, after Bidviest Wits goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was forced to pull out from the team due to injury.
South Africa’s coach Molefi Ntseki was really counting of Cyril Chibwe to be a perfect replacement, especially after his outstanding display against Kaizer Chiefs, in that precious 1-0 win over the weekend for Polokwane City.
Chibwe’s man of the match performance handed the league leaders a first defeat of the season.
26 year old Cyril Chibwe was born in the North West of South Africa to a Zambian father.
“We made small research on Cyril Chibwe of Polokwane City, and he is a South African, born in the North West, and we sent a call up for him to join us in this camp,” Ntseki said.
“Unfortunately he will be playing for his father’s country, which is Zambia. So he will be joining the Zambian team in camp and that is why we have Ricardo coming in. There are of the same age, born in 1993.”
South Africa have turned to Bitvest Wits reserve goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.
Molefi Ntseki thinks South Africa were slow to secure a passport for Cyril Chibwe and hopes that they can spot potential players in the future and move for them timely.
“I think maybe he [Chibwe] was approached long before us, maybe they made the necessary preparations for him to join the Zambian team because if he did not have a Zambian passport, they would have had to do the necessary documents for him in order to play,” Ntseki tried to explain.
“But I think it is a good thing, we also have some players playing overseas that we feel they need to come and play for Bafana Bafana, and we are also in the process of talking to them, their parents and their clubs so they can have South African citizenship and play for the national team.”
