Dutch Eredivise giants Ajax Amsterdam have recorded a massive setback in their dreams in the 2020-2021 UEFA interclub competitions as they were narrowly-edged by Atalanta at home in match-day six of the UEFA Champions League.
The boys of coach Ten Haag were second best at home to their Italian guest in a night to forget.
The game was decided in the 85th minute when midfielder Freuler picked up a lose ball in the midfield and slipped through Colombian forward L. Muriel through on goal, and fresh off the bench, he rounded Cameroon’s Andre Onana before calmly slotting the ball into the empty net to make it one-nil for Atalanta against ten-man Ajax.
This is just six minutes after Ajax Young midfielder R Gravenberch had been sent off by Carlos Del Cerro Grande for leaving a hand on the face of Gomez who made the most of it to provoke a second booking for the teenager.
The Italian Serie A side protected their lead till the end, thus earning three points and qualification into the round of 16 while Ajax’s run of seven game without defrat against Italian sides end just like their champions league run this season.
The Dutch Eredivise outfit drops to the Europa League which they were runners-up with Andre Onana on goal in 2017.
